In honor of this scholar's birthday, we thought that he should be the first featured scholar on our blog.

Born on March 8th 1884, in Breslau, Germany, Richard Kroner was a philospher who focused on Hegel and Hegelian philosophy. Although his family had converted, due to his Jewish ancestry he was dismissed from his position at the University of Kiel in 1934.

He lectured at Vassar College in January 1940 on and again in May 1946. After his first lecture, President MacCracken recommended him for a position at McGill College, but the job offer there was later revoked amidst public backlash due to his nationality. He was eventually able to secure a permanent position at Union Theological Seminary.

Works by Kroner:

  • Zweck und Gesetz in der Biologie. Eine logische Untersuchung (1913)

  • Kants Weltanschauung (1914)

  • Von Kant bis Hegel.

  • Band: Von der Vernunftkritik zur Naturphilosophie (1921)

  • Band: Von der Naturphilosophie zur Philosophie des Geistes (1924)

  • Die Selbstverwirklichung des Geistes. Prolegomena zur Kulturphilosophie (1928)

  • Hegel. Zum 100. Todestag (1932)

  • Speculation in pre-Christian philosophy (1957)

  • Selbstbesinnung. Drei Lehrstunden (1958)

  • Speculation and Revelation In Modern Philosophy (1961)

  • Between Faith and Thought: Reflections and Suggestions (1966)

  • Freiheit und Gnade (1969)
